Marvel Anime: Iron Man - Complete Series

Marvel Anime: Iron Man is an appealing episodic reboot of the venerable Marvel Comics franchise, and part of a wider anime collaboration between Marvel Entertainment and the popular Japanese animation studio Madhouse. The live-action Iron Man features serve as the launching point for this 12-episode series, which finds Tony Stark (voiced by Heroes' Adrian Pasdar in the English-language dub) in Japan, constructing an Arc Reactor station that will provide limitless worldwide energy, as well as a new prototype armor, Iron Man Dio, which will allow him to gracefully exit the superhero business. Both plans turn sour with the arrival of the Zodiac terrorist organization, which commandeers both the Dio suit and the station for its world-domination plans. In his pursuit of Zodiac, Stark is pitted against the group's giant robot warriors, as well as a long-lost figure from his own past. Rendered in the bold and often striking animation by which Madhouse has earned its reputation, Marvel Anime: Iron Man is also action packed throughout its 12 episodes, and hews closely to its comic legacy thanks to writer Warren Ellis, who weaves appearances by established figures from its canon like Pepper Potts, Chika Tanaka, and even Wolverine (voiced by Pasdar's Heroes costar Milo Ventimiglia, who reprises the role for the Wolverine anime series) into the story.

Think Like A Man (2012)

Fans of Steve Harvey's wildly popular relationship self-help book, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man--and even people unfamiliar with the book but interested in love, lust, and related topics--will enjoy the fictionalized film based on it, Think Like a Man. Harvey's book's tenets involve letting a woman's softer side show more, and understanding that men have different sexual needs. The book has been polarizing, but Think Like a Man, the film, gives women more of an even playing field, and handles the topics with a lighter touch. The stars are uniformly excellent and believable, including Gabrielle Union, Taraji P. Henson, Michael Ealy, Chris Brown, and Kevin Hart.

What to Expect When You're Expecting

An all-star cast afflicted with baby fever gives What to Expect When You're Expecting a lot of heart and more than a few laughs. This is a fictionalized account of the best-selling advice book, interweaving several couples' storylines as they deal with pregnancy, fertility issues, adoption, and more. Standouts include Cameron Diaz as a high-powered celebrity fitness trainer and Matthew Morrison of Glee as her TV dance partner; Jennifer Lopez, a successful photographer yearning for a child; and Elizabeth Banks (30 Rock), hilarious as a sanctimonious motherhood champion who has to confront some of her own preachiness when she suddenly becomes pregnant herself. And the guys are funny, too--especially Chris Rock, a member of the "dudes' group" who bond with their tots and each other every Saturday in the park, and Dennis Quaid, a blowhard expecting twins with his new trophy wife (Brooklyn Decker, a very talented comedian).

Dark Shadows (2012)

Every movie Tim Burton makes is a haunted mansion: a Gothic pile full of hidden passageways, veiled secrets, and ghosts swinging from the chandeliers. Collinwood, the family mansion in Dark Shadows, is therefore a Burton playground, and the proper centerpiece for this daffy adaptation of the cult '60s TV soap opera. For Burton's version, the angst-ridden vampire Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp--were you really expecting someone else?) is exhumed after a 200-year burial at the hands of local witch and disappointed lover Angelique (Eva Green, Casino Royale). The year is 1972, so--after the nicely antique prologue and the suitably creepy arrival of fresh-faced nanny Victoria Winters (Bella Heathcote) to Collinwood--the film shifts gears to allow for campy gags about Barnabas and his initial encounters with McDonald's signs and women's lib. Burton is incorrigible about that blend of Mad magazine-style spoofery and his very real affection for the gauzy tropes of horror movies, and while Dark Shadows rarely solves the disconnect between those tones, it certainly is silly and fun on its own terms.

The Dictator (2012)

The Dictator wants to inspire outrage and hilarity in equal measures. Sacha Baron Cohen rose to fame through Borat, a sort of Candid Camera movie that let real people reveal their prejudices in response to an outrageously conceived character. Here, Cohen acts in a scripted story about an equally outrageous character, a brutal dictator named Aladeen, ruler of the fictional North African country of Wadiya. While in New York to protest United Nations sanctions against him, Aladeen is kidnapped by a scheming underling (Ben Kingsley) and stripped of his beard, rendering him unrecognizable. A vegan co-op manager (Anna Faris, pretty unrecognizable herself in a black wig) takes him under her wing, leading to a change of heart… sort of. Cohen's lowbrow humor is oddly intellectual

Snow White And The Huntsman

It was also much darker and more action-packed than any version I've seen before. The little twists in the narration and plot are backed up very well within the context of the film.

Battleship [Blu-ray] (2012)

Following the success of Transformers and G.I. Joe, Hasbro brings another of its beloved properties to the big screen, with explosive and cheerfully improbable results. The situation: Aliens splash down outside Hawaii, surrounding the islands with an impenetrable force field and wreaking havoc on the captive population. While the world outside watches helplessly, a skeleton crew of naval officers and civilians (led by Taylor Kitsch's cocky washout and Rihanna's weapons expert) must figure out a way to save the planet while being seriously outgunned. Director Peter Berg, whose previous films The Rundown and Hancock displayed a playful tweaking of genre conventions, keeps things surprisingly high and tight here, depicting military tactics and the chain of command with an honest respect, including casting actual combat veterans in pivotal supporting roles. While such a reverent approach is certainly admirable, it coexists uneasily with the inherent goofiness of the premise, particularly during the climactic scene where the heroes sit down in front of a grid and, yes, fire a missile at B7.

Battle Royale: The Complete Collection [Blu-ray]

With the Japanese currently leading the way in thought-provoking cinematic violence, it's only fitting that Kinji Fukasaku's Battle Royale is being touted as a Clockwork Orange for the 21st century. Based on the novel by Koshun Takami, the film opens with a series of fleeting images of unruly Japanese schoolchildren, whose bad behavior provides a justification for the "punishments" that will ensue. Once the prequel has been dispensed with, the classmates are drugged and awaken on an island where they find they have been fitted with dog collars that monitor their every move. Instructed by their old teacher ("Beat" Takeshi) with the aid of an upbeat MTV-style video, they are told of their fate: after an impartial lottery they have been chosen to fight each other in a three-day, no-rules contest, the "Battle Royale." Their only chance of survival is through the death of all their classmates. Some pupils embrace their mission with zeal, while others simply give up or try to become peacemakers and revolutionaries. However, the ultimate drive for survival comes from the desire to protect the one you love. Battle Royale works on many different levels, highlighting the authorities' desperation to enforce law and order and the alienation caused by the generation gap. Whether you consider the film an important social commentary or simply watch it for the adrenaline-fueled violence, this is set to become cult viewing for the computer game generation and beyond. --Nikki Disney

Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones, the first book in author George R.R. Martin's sprawling fantasy saga A Song of Fire and Ice, serves as the basis for this brawny, lusty series about courtly intrigue and civil war in a sprawling fantasy kingdom. TV and fantasy veteran Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings, Sharpe's Rifles) leads the massive cast as the warrior-noble Eddard Stark, who reluctantly assumes the role as the Hand of the King after the mysterious death of his predecessor. The King, Robert Baratheon, has leadership of the lands of Westeros, a mythical country plagued by severe, decade-long shifts in weather. His rule is challenged by the exiled Prince Viserys Targaryen (Harry Lloyd), who trades his own sister (Emilia Clarke) for the allegiance of the Dothraki, a savage nomadic tribe led by Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa of the 2011 Conan the Barbarian). A shocking secret kept hidden by Queen Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey, 300) leads to an upset in the balance of power and, ultimately, a challenge to the House of Stark to bring control to the bloodshed that threatens to overtake Westeros.

Act of Valor [Blu-ray] (2012)

Act of Valor aims to capture the experience of Navy SEALs as they combat the schemes of a Chechnyan jihadist who wants to send suicide bombers into American stadiums and shopping malls. Their efforts take them all over the world, from Costa Rica to Somalia to the South Pacific. For added authenticity, eight real Navy SEALs have been cast in the lead roles. In terms of tactics and equipment,  Act of Valor is rigorously authentic. What marks this as fantasy is the perfection of the missions (there are no civilian casualties; every sniper takes out his target in a single head shot--there are a lot of exploding heads in this movie) and absolute moral clarity (the wild-eyed jihadist and drug cartel foot soldiers are unquestionably evil; one of the main characters carries his grandfather's folded flag from World War II). The performances of the SEALs, though well intentioned, make you appreciate the complexities of Arnold Schwarzenegger. What's smart about Act of Valor is that it doesn't waste much time with setups or dialogue, but heads straight into the missions. However, much of these missions are filmed like a first-person-shooter video game, which lends a sense of immediacy but undercuts the sense of reality. Still, all in all,  Act of Valor is a sincere attempt to express admiration for the men and women risking their lives in the military. --Bret Fetzer

Iron Man 2 (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (2010)

After the high-flying adventures of the first  Iron Man picture, the billionaire arms manufacturer and irrepressible bon vivant Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) finds himself nursing a hangover. But not like any hangover he's had before: this one is toxic, a potentially deadly condition resulting from heavy metals (or something) bleeding out of the hardware he's installed in the middle of his chest. This is the problem Stark needs to solve in  Iron Man 2, not to mention the threat from resentful Russian science whiz Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke), whose father helped create the  Iron Man  technology. There's an even bigger problem for the film: the need to set up a future Marvel Comics movie universe in which a variety of veteran characters will join forces, a requirement that slows down whatever through-line the movie can generate (although fanboys will have a good time digging the clues laid out here). Actually, the main plot is no great shakes: another Iron Man suit is deployed (Don Cheadle, replacing Terrence Howard from the first film, gets to climb inside), Stark continues to bicker with assistant Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and a weaselly business rival (Sam Rockwell) tries to out-do the  Iron Man  suit with an army of Vanko-designed drones. Mickey Rourke is a letdown, burdened by a wobbly Russian accent and looking skeptical about the genre foolishness around him, and Scarlett Johansson has to wait until the final couple of reels to unleash some butt-kickin' skills as the future Black Widow. That climax is sufficiently lively, and the initial half-hour, including Stark's smirky appearance before a Senate committee and a wacky showdown at the Monaco Grand Prix, provides a strong, swift opening. But the lull between these high points is crying for more action and more Downey improv. --Robert Horton

There is a new criminal mastermind at large - Professor James Moriarty (Jared Harris) - and not only is he Holmes' intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may give him an advantage over the renowned detective. Around the globe, headlines break the news: a scandal takes down an Indian cotton tycoon; a Chinese opium trader dies of an apparent overdose; bombings in Strasbourg and Vienna; the death of an American steel magnate... No one sees the connective thread between these seemingly random events - no one, that is, except the great  Sherlock Holmes, who has discerned a deliberate web of death and destruction. At its center sits a singularly sinister spider: Moriarty. Holmes' investigation into Moriarty's plot becomes more dangerous as it leads him and Watson out of London to France, Germany and finally Switzerland.
